Specialisms
Many would argue that a good editor can work with content from any subject area. But some clients prefer their freelancers to have specialist knowledge.
I have divided my specialisms into: (1) areas where I have formal education or a keen personal interest plus editorial experience; and (2) areas where I have editorial experience but no subject-specific qualifications.
(1) Formal education/personal interest and editorial experience
- Sport: particularly British and European football but also rugby, athletics and Gaelic games (GAA).
- Literature in English, including literary history and criticism.
- English language.
- Scottish history/ethnology.
(2) Editorial experience
- Medicine: particularly ophthalmology, addictions, social care and patient information.
- Education: secondary education, further/higher education, distance learning.
- Business/management training: economics, organisational behaviour, human resource management, strategic planning.
